REDDITCH VIRTUAL MUSEUM
Redditch Workers
As well as the multiple trades associated with Needle making, Redditch residents were employed in a whole range of trades and professions. From analysis the census records we are able to show the variety of such employment.

In days before widespread education for the young, social welfare and pensions many Redditch inhabitants started their working life at an early age and worked on well passed what we now accept as a reasonable retirement age. The people affected by such a working life are illustrated here.

Here also, are details of the residents who lived and worked in streets lost to development & modernisation over the last 175 years
.

Redditch Workers - Older Workers
In Redditch of the late 1800's and early 1900s there was not the safety net of the welfare state and without pensions, many workers were force to continue earning a living well past what we now call a retirement age. This analysis shows what some of the older residents were still doing in their later lives.
Redditch Workers - Younger Workers
Larger families, lower wages and without child benefits or widespread education, may parents were forced to send their children out to work from an early age.  We have looked at those past residents who were 13 years old or younger who were shown on census records to be employed.
