In the 1855 Billings Directory and Gazetteer John's father John Smallwood senior was classed as Fish Hook Maker, Red Lion Street. In the 1873 Littlebury's Directory and gazetteer it stated that John Smallwood & Sons, Central Works, George Street, Redditch. At the time of his death 10th February 1891 John was living in Red Lion Street, Redditch and it stated that he was a Fish Hook and Fishing Tackle Manufacturer. On the 1891 census his wife Ann was living 26 Red Lion Street.
Wife Eliza (46) + 1 niece at home. On the 1881 census they lived at 12 Alcester Street. At the time of John's death 12th November 1895 he lived at 4 Alcester Street.
Wife Matilda (25) plus 2 children at home. The enumerator had put this down as Red Lion Street but fairly sure this was actually Alcester Street. On the 1891 census Henry lived with his mother Elizabeth in Feckenham. In the 1900 Kelly's Directory an Edwin Humphreys had a Butcher's shop here.
