Oakly Road Memories

At the end of Oakly Road furthest from the Kingfisher Centre is Oakly House. In the 1930s Milward, the jolly butcher from Evesham Street, was living there. Their daughter married Philip Clarke, Managing Director of Sinew Works which stood on the site of the former ISTEL building.

John Wright, the timber merchants who had a large site in Studley, lived at the house in Oakly Road, Glencoc, now the Polish Club. They were Methodists and very penny- pinching, for example, they used to send the maid out to get a penny back on the pop bottle. Salop Road and Ludlow Road were also built in about 1900.
