Migration And Ethnic Groups
A rare picture of Abbey Hostel in Redditch located just across the Birmingham Road opposite the gas works. The hostel was built to house migrant workers coming to Redditch to work in industries supporting the war effort in WW2.
At the start of the 19th century, the population of Redditch was about 1.000 people. It is now nearly 90,000 people. The Industrial development of the town, particularly the needle industry resulted in steady expansion.
Redditch became a 'New town' in 1964 which led to further growth.
These changes in population have resulted from peoples migration to the town for a variety of reasons.
