Shopping at it's zenith..

Peter Harris remembers…..NextBack

The Old Evesham Street was a bustling, thriving thoroughfare of personal service and individuality. Every shop was unique, both in service and ownership. The shops were individual, having stood for a thousand years, many with the original owners still in attendance! Blinds that pulled out over the pavement, ankle-level gratings that drew the imagination to some underground cavern. The peeling paint, the inviting smells, the gleaming windows with their carefully displayed hats or clothes. Satisfied shoppers would emerge with their brown paper parcels, all neatly wrapped and tied with string, the plastic 'Tescbury' bag had not yet arrived. These were businesses that had stood the test of time, institutions of confidence and of life going on forever.
