Works Fire Brigades

Vic Bott remembers…..NextBack

"A works fire brigade was necessary in an industrial area because the factories were dealing with industrial waste, acids and dangerous machinery.”

‘This meant that if a crisis occurred, 60 highly skilled firemen could be called upon with a few minutes. During the war this fire brigade became the AFS ie Auxiliary Fire Services. They were the front line troops of the Blitz and would effect rescues and defuse bombs. If you were an officer in the Fire Brigade you became an officer in the AFS.”
