The Night the Bombs Fell
NextBack“When I was fourteen I was in the Worcestershire army cadets.”
"We usually went to Norton barracks for our induction into the army, but some weekends, especially on the long weekends, we used to go to Hewell Grange. It was used as a storage depot for armoured fighting vehicles such as scout cars Bren gun carriers ,army radio cars etc.”
“We used to do silly bits to the vehicles - basic maintenance such as topping up the fuel tanks, testing the oil and batteries, and things like that. Sometimes we used to live in Hewell Grange in double decker bunks lined up in the corridor. It was draughty, you try sleeping in a long corridor! The Grange was still in a fairly good condition. it was a bit knocked about from all these personnel using it, for example, the flooring was worn from all the army boots tramping over it, but on the whole the army kept it in a reasonable state”.
