Walford Street
NextBackI was born in Walford Street. There was one monkey that lived in a cage at the back of a house in Walford Street, at number 39. It escaped and was a dangerous animal and everybody stayed indoors, closed the windows, until it was caught. The last time it got out it was out for about 1½ hours and then it was shot. The monkey was shot by Mr Manning of the Plumber’s Arms. It was stuffed and placed in the window of 39 Walford Street. People even crossed the road to avoid walking past it. This was about 1952.
