War watching

John Lewis remembers…..NextBack

“From an open fire door at lunch-time, we used binoculars and watched the Abbey Hostel being built for war-workers, and just beyond that we saw army vehicles and troops arrive, they began erecting huts and an anti-aircraft gun on the hill where the crematorium now stands.”

“Another gun was on Lowan’s Hill both of them presumably to protect High Duty Alloys. I only saw 'our' gun used once, and that was when an enemy aircraft flew around, and dropped the bomb near the BSA canteen.”
