Hostels

Rhona remembers…..NextBack

“During the war hundreds of workers were drafted in, some of them came from as far away as Scotland and Ireland, consequently there was an urgent need for hostel accommodation. Many of them were young girls in their late teens and early twenties who usually worked in factories on capstans, drilling or milling machines. They were given accommodation in various large old houses. The Red House, next door but one to Smallwood Hospital, was converted into a hostel complete with Matron.”

"There were two hostels by the Holloway, Terry's house was for girls and there was another house converted into a hostel further up the road on the left before you got to the needle factory. Then there was the YMCA outside the old Danilo I used to go and help to serve teas on a Saturday. At the top of Birmingham Road and just past the Unicorn there was another large house which became a hostel''
