Getting married in wartime

Barbara Taylor remembers…..NextBack

“Peace had only just been declared when Cliff and I tied the knot. We were married in 1947, the year of the snow.”

''We were engaged when I was 21, then Cliff was on embarkation leave for two weeks so I told him we were being married on the Saturday. We had a special licence and everything was arranged in a week. I had to give coupons for my wedding dress. We borrowed all sorts of things, a veil and the bridesmaid's dresses! We did have a cake but we were only allowed a single tier. A friend of mine sat in the Food Office all afternoon to get a permit for the cake, then you had to take the permit to Wimbush's in Alcester Street (kept by the two Miss Barratts) and they would make it for you.”

“Cliff had to clear the snow off the road so that the cars could reach my house. There was a shortage of fuel therefore no heating in the church, everybody was frozen. I still have my wedding dress and the silver horseshoes.”
