A D Foulks

Peter White remembers…..NextBack

A D Foulkes was a builders merchant. The company had a shop on Church Green East but the main building was located on the north side of Peakman Street. When I wasn’t ‘working’ in Webbs Bakery I could be found lurking in the vicinity of the big sliding door which was the Peakman Street entrance. It was at A D Foulkes that I learned to mix cement by hand at the tender age of four (that wouldn’t be allowed now!) . I also learned how Foulkes made fireplaces by attaching ceramic tiles to  precast concrete slabs.

A D Foulkes can be seen  on the left – sadly the picture is of poor quality and does not show the sliding door.
