Birdcage Walk

Peter White remembers…..NextBack

A Mrs France, writing in a book entiteled " Worcestershire Within Living Memory", mentions that her family regarded  the gardens surrounding St Stephens  Church as their garden.  This map shows the area which I surmise Mrs. France called ‘her garden’.

You can see the position of the drinking fountain in Birdcage Walk –  the bowl and plinth of which were carved from a grey stone.

There were also a pair of Telephone Call Boxes there. These were painted red and were of the Button ‘A’ and Button ‘B’ type. You inserted your money (usually 4d), asked the Operator to connect you to the number and then pressed button A when connected. If there was no connection you pressed button B to get your money back. How many times did I, as a lad, press button B when passing the boxes on the way to the Library in the hope of getting coins? It worked sometimes though!!
