Clem Jackson

Peter Harris remembers…..NextBack

Clem Jackson owned the double fronted garage towards the end. The doors had been modified as glass showcases. In these were every imaginable Dinky Toy ever made, cars, tractors, lorries, buses, army vehicles and many many others. This was always a definite stop on a Saturday morning on ones way home from the Danilo cinema. He was an agent for Royal Enfield products, so an assortment of bicycles were displayed either side of the doors in the showroom windows. The inside of the shop was crammed with lines of both new and used cycles for sale or in for repair. Clem himself was a jolly looking chap who usually had a small cigar on the go. His slightly rotund figure was complemented by his thinning snow white hair. He employed a mouse like dark short haired little mechanic with a somewhat greasy complexion as I remember, who usually wore a dark oily charcoal coloured cow gown. I bought my first motorbike from him, which frequently saw the inside again for repair after having yet another spill! Later on the garage was taken over and became a Skoda Dealership. It was rumoured that a certain local girl had been photographed, minus clothing across the bonnet of one of them for some sort of publicity escapade.
