A good employer
NextBackMy future husband, Fred, was Manager of Liptons before he was called up. Liptons were very good to him, they sent him a food parcel every week. Every man in the armed forces who had worked at Liptons received a parcel.
When Fred was on leave he used to walk me home in the air-raids. Fred was replaced by a manager who was physically handicapped and consequently not in the army. Eventually I was the only one left in the shop who knew Fred. The manager used to say to me, 'We have this parcel to send to this chippie, could you put a few words on paper to send to him?
Fred used to write back and that's how it started. When Fred came home from Germany he bought me a blouse made of parachute silk and a pair of nylons which were like gold in those days, and he bought me a watch. We were married in 1948. After the war I went back to Liptons.''
