My House, My Street

NextBack

I was born in this, the first house (No.2) in Wellington Street in 1944. It was a modest dwelling consisting of a living room and a kitchen/scullery downstairs with a passage between where the coal was stored. On the first floor was my parents bedroom and the second floor was an attic where my brother and I slept. The house backed onto one of Redditch’s  infamous ‘yards’.

In the yard was a brick and concrete air raid shelter which endured into the late 1950s when it was demolished to create more space.

The toilet block  ‘across the yard’ consisted of 4 earth closets which were eventually replaced in the early 1950s by flush toilets (luxury!) and shared by the occupants of 2 to 6 Wellington Street and 6 to 12 Peakman Street
