On the ‘phone
NextBack“During the war I was one of four girls who manned the telephones of the fire brigade in Red Lion Street. I did that one night a week and then on another night I helped in the WRVS canteen, which was on the top of Unicorn Hill, opposite Collins, the butchers. I was manning the telephones the night that the bombs dropped in Orchard Street and Glover Street. A telephone message came through for a purple alert that meant we had to put everything on standby. Then we got a red alert. After that there came a terrific bump. I looked round. The three girls were under the tables where the telephones were. The men were under the operations table. I was just sitting there they thought I was terribly brave, but I was just rooted to the spot."
