School Days
NextBackMy junior school was St. Stephen's Church of England in Archer Road. I have a group photograph of the teachers that my old teacher, Miss Johnson sent me a few years ago. In December my mind goes back to that warm lofty ceilinged classroom, the lights on in the darkening afternoons, making Chinese lanterns, paperchains etc. for the classroom. It was a real centre of the town school, with some of the poorer children attending too. A Church of England School with Eucharist books, Old Testament tracts to learn and missionary hymns too. If you were top of the class, you handed out the milk bottles as you were told you knew all they had to teach you!! What a shock I got when I went to the grammar school down the road. No more motherly Mrs. Griffin there. Baffling subjects - chemistry, physics, difficult maths, and very strict teachers in caps and gowns. A treat after school with my two friends to Mrs. Hilda Garner's cafe helped us get through the day!
