Souvenirs of a night in 1940
NextBackWhen the incendiaries burned away there was nothing left but the rail fin and people were collecting the tail fins as souvenirs. At that time there were two people working in the electroplating shop at a local factory, Jack and his sister. In 1970 I was working as a brick-layer for a big building firm we were refurbishing houses down Batchley, and something struck me as mighty funny. Every 5th or 6th or sixth house had a chromium-plated fin off the incendiary bombs as an ornament. It occurred to me that Jack and his sister had had a nice little side-line going there'
