The Gaumont Cinema

NextBack

The Gaumont Cinema was in Church Road next to the Midland Red Bus Garage and was considered up market. I suppose it was a bit better appointed with more comfortable seats and it cost a few pence more accordingly. The ice cream girl was replaced by Mrs Wasley, a formidable lady of sergeant major proportions who stood no messing. Like the Danilo, the films changed on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday. I did visit on the occasional Saturday morning but don't remember much about it, except that they did have kids up on the stage during the interval on occasions playing simple games for lollipops. As the popularity of the cinema waned with the advent of the video shop, so the Gaumont eventually hit the dust and became a Bingo Hall.
