The Night of 11th December
NextBack“On the night of 11th December 1940 three High Explosive bombs were dropped in the Evesham Road, Orchard Street and Glover Street. Six were killed and 36 injured 12 of them seriously Somewhere between eight and eleven houses were destroyed and as many as 489 houses damaged. Eighty plate glass windows were smashed. The following is an interesting piece from Barbara, an elderly resident. She believes that there was a fire at the Batteries just before the Glover Street bomb was dropped.”
''My Aunty lived at Highbury opposite the Council House on Mount Pleasant. She looked out of the window one night and saw that Alkaline Batteries was on fire. She went over to the Council House and said, 'I reckon a bomb has been dropped on the Batteries, it's all in flames'.”
“They didn't know about it and that's when they sounded the siren. It was the same night that the Germans bombed Glover Street and several people were killed.''
