A thousand incendiary devices
NextBack“The Council had moved my mum to Hazel Road and one night a lot of incendiaries fell on the road. Incendiaries were the conventional-looking bomb with a tail fin but they were full of inflammable material, evidently the idea was that they would show the following aircraft where to drop the bombs. The incendiary would flare for very long time, however, people were very quick to put them out and no damage was done. Some fell in our garden. I can remember dad running down the garden with a stirrup pump and a bucket to put out the flames.''
“I kept two empty incendiary bombs for years.”
On 19 April 1941 more than a thousand incendiary devices were dropped at about 11.30 pm across northern Redditch.
