The Square

Peakman Street had junctions with Wellington Street and Victoria Street and the latter two streets in turn joined up with Queen Street and it was this pattern that we, as children in the 1950s knew as ‘The Square’. It was round The Square that we used to race on bicycles or on precarious carts made from scrap timber. We were not oblivious of traffic, rather unaware of it for there was so little. This state of affairs was to last only a few years before traffic measures in the shape of a one way system (as depicted by the road signs in some of the photographs) made racing of any sort dangerous and then impossible……….progress? marched on to give us what is there today and to leave us with memories of what had been.
