The Universal School of Motoring

NextBack

The Universal School of Motoring had their offices above one of the shops opposite Jacksons. It was here that 'Trevor Tipper(?)' and his instructors taught many of the drivers of the day (including myself) to drive. A Bromsgrove office was also opened. As I recall, Trevor went on to better things, namely he somehow acquired the contract to plant most of the New Town's thousands of lamp standards, under the name of Stanshire Lighting. I remember that on the day of my test I was provided with the 'Bromsgrove' Mini, which had been 'rolled' the previous day and the body was pushed over at an uncomfortable angle of some fifteen degrees to the nearside. The examiner of the time looked at it a bit funny, but off we went. He must have been impressed at my skills as he gave me my pink ticket and passed me. I had only had four lessons at 'seventeen and a tanner', and had held my licence for just three weeks!
