After the was over
NextBackAfter the war, everything didn't get back to normal straight away.
"Rationing continued and there were shortages of this and that. During the winter of 1947 there was a power shortage, factories were allocated electricity in turn, so many days per week which meant that I was on short-time again. However, there came such a heavy fall of snow that I was unable to get to work anyway. The village was buried in snow. You looked along the road and there were no hedges, nothing but this vast expanse of snow. I happened to see the local Council road-man, Billy Wilson, digging away and he said to me, 'If you've got nothing to do, I'll take you on if you can get hold of a spade and shovel'. I was therefore, together with some of my neighbours employed by the local Council for a few days. Our first job was to dig out a bus. It was entirely covered in snow, you could only see the top of it. At one time, Billy Wilson was digging in the snow when he suddenly completely disappeared from sight. He had dropped into a blow hole.”
