Trying to enlist in the Airforce

NextBack

"I wanted to be a pilot so I joined the Air Training Corps. I had to have a medical so my mum took me up to Birmingham. A doctor pushed this tube up my nose and he pushed and pushed. He said, ‘You've got a perforated ear drum mate, I wouldn't like to be with you in a Spitfire'.

I said, 'You'd have a job, it's only got one seat”. My mum said warningly, “Terence!” So in June 1942 I joined the ground crew.

'When I had three or four days holiday I came home on my first leave. I had got my airborne uniform on and you know what the kids are like, “Oh, look at him all done up in his uniform'. I went off to the air-force a young kid and I came home a man".
