Water Tanks

NextBack

I was born in Rectory Road in 1939 at Barratts fish and chip shop (still a fish and chip shop) and there was a water tank at the end of Rectory Road where it joined Birchfield Road at what we knew as Nailpasser's Green.

I remember sitting on the top of the posts holding up the surrounding fence and, I believe, when it was drained all manner of disgusting things were found in it.

I remember being soundly 'told off' by the Headmaster of St.Luke's school - Mr Lampitt - who saw me sitting on the fence as he went past in his car on the way back to school after lunch.

The area is now a little 'park' with a path leading through to Birchfield Road by the shop called the Chocolate Box which was then run by Mr and Mrs Brazil as a sweet shop.
