Bingo Calling

NextBack

In 1962 I took a job with a local company known as Hancox Electrical in Hamilton Road, during which time I was instructed to convert the Gaumont cinema into a Bingo Hall. These memories are still vivid in my mind, as for three weeks I was treated to ”Bambi,” the last film to be shown at that cinema before it's conversion. The last week entailed working on the stage behind the screen alongside the biggest loud speaker you can imagine. This blasted out some 50 watts plus - bad heads were the resulting order of the day and night.

Come the opening which was a Friday, my working mate and myself were invited to the grand opening to ensure that all went smoothly. The sight of a nice bonus also helped to ensure that all was well with the electrical installation. The record at the top of the pops then was “Summer Place” by Francis Charles Chacksfield, other wise known as Frank. This tune was played continually, both at the beginning before the curtains opened, and over and over again during the interval

After leaving Malcolm Hall, I became self employed and officially retired 3 years ago at the age of 73 years. My hobbies now are radio controlled boats of which I have a fine collection.

Not many of these have won prizes but they are displayed all over the country and at local water festivals
