Dad's Army Exercises
NextBack'One of our exercises was carried out on the Evesham Road where the mini-island is at Headless Cross. There are shops on the right-hand side, and a member of the Home Guard lived over one of these shops. We had to run a clothes line from the bedroom window of his house to the house opposite, to which we attached a runner line. Attached to the runner was an old blanket soaked in paraffin. We had to set fire to the blanket then suspend it over the middle of the road, the idea was to drop it on a German tank. It was a serious business.”
“People really thought the Germans were going to invade. They were only 22 miles away across the Channel."
