Eggs

“The eggs came from Poland and were very white, they arrived each week packed in shavings. We found in the shops that if you put your eggs in a bucket of water the bad eggs would float and the good ones would sink to the bottom. If you were given a bad egg there was no taking It back to the shop, that was just your bad luck. We each had our own customers. We knew all our customers by name, it was a family affair.

We used to have a cat. We tried to keep her out of the shop but it wasn't always possible. She used to knock the eggs down then jump down and eat them. Some mornings we arrived to find this sticky mess on the floor. We were allowed so much money for keeping the cat she was good for ratting”

“I remember Mrs. Houston. I used to have to hold her horse outside the shop while she went in to do her shopping. She was very particular. She did like her bacon very thin cut. I also remember when decimal coinage came in. One supermarket turned all the labels round, writing the same price on the back but putting a ‘p’ instead of a ‘d’. They made ££'s overnight'' '
