He was born in London and resided in Worcestershire.  The Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) was awarded to Alexander William Henry Montgomery-Cuninghame for meritorious or distinguished service during wartime.

He married Barbara Gray-Cheape, daughter of Hugh Annersley Gray-Cheap of Bentley Manor, who died in the 1st world war.
