The building of Batchley housing estate, south of Salters Lane, commenced before 1939
and continued after the war. At the time it was considered a showpiece, and one of its
most attractive features, still preserved, are ornamental ponds fed by Batchley Brook.
Once through this green oasis the brook is banished out of sight and heads down to
Hewell Road where, in 1882, water was extracted to serve the new public swimming
baths, but contamination being a problem the brook ceased to be a direct supply early
on.
