Kelly’s Directory of Worcestershire 1896 described John Bowater Jones as the resident librarian
and collector to the Redditch Literary and Scientific Institute. The Institute’s President was ‘Col.
The Hon. G. W. Clive’, while the Secretary was Donald Mathews. The School of Art’s master was
Henry Dowson Dickinson, while Kelly’s 1912 directory named E. Lupton Allen as master. The
Redditch 1891 census returns also showed that John Jones was the Institute’s resident librarian
and collector, and that he was born about 1837 in Staffordshire. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were
still there in 1901. By 1911 the librarian was Arthur Davie Lewis, born in 1869, and his wife,
Gertrude, who was a music teacher.
