Redditch Heritage Further Education in Redditch
The Church Road building of the Literary and Scientific Institute from 1886 to 1929. It housed
the School of Art from 1886 to 1972, and later the College Training Restaurant.
The freehold of the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Adelaide Street was bought for £2,000
and this building housed the first Technical School in Redditch. The school was opened
in 1892 with 137 students. Subjects taught were English, woodcarving, elementary
hygiene, carpentry, household and artisan cooking. The rooms soon became insufficient
and rooms at St. Stephen’s National School had to be used. By 1896 the Adelaide Street
building was inadequate and a new Technical School was built in Easemore Road. The
foundation stone of the new building was laid in 1899 with the inscription: ‘This corner
stone was laid by the Hon. Robert George Baron Windsor on 1st November 1899 – The
Worcestershire County Council giving largely to the building fund.’
The building of the Technical School which opened in 1900. It became the Redditch College of
Further Education in 1953 and part of North East Worcestershire College from 1988. It became
known as Z block. This photo was taken in 2001, four years before it was demolished.
