Redditch Heritage The National School
After The Closure
In 1957 the College of FE was still based in the Technical School building in Easemore Road that had
been opened in 1900. By the 1957-8 session there were 1,269 college students, and even though the
Junior Technical School had departed, students overflowed into five annexes in the town. The
annexes included St. Stephen’s School (Peakman Street). Clearly, Redditch College needed new
buildings, and these were opened for teaching in January 1961.
St. Stephen’s School moved to more modern premises in the 1960s. The Peakman Street building
then became an annexe to the College and in 1972 provided a home for the Art section before
demolition in 1983.
These developments are shown in the following photos and maps.

The workshops on the left, on the northern corner of Peakman Street and Archer Road replaced one
of the St. Stephen’s buildings (if they were still there then?)
