The Local Government Board Act 1871

The Local Government Board was a Government supervisory body overseeing local
administration in England and Wales from 1871 to 1919. It took over the public health and
local government responsibilities of the Home Secretary and the Privy Council and all the
functions of the Poor Law Board, which was abolished.

               The Public Health Act 1875

This Act was primarily a consolidation of 30 previous laws. It established that every part of
the country had to have a public health authority. Every public health authority had to have
at least one medical officer and one sanitary inspector to ensure the laws on food adulteration,
housing, water supplies and cleansing were enforced. Local authorities had wide powers to
lay sewers and drains, build reservoirs, parks, public baths and public conveniences.
