The HISTORY of REDDITCH New Town
The last 30 Years, What’s Happened in Redditch?
Since the rapid, almost revolutionary changes, that the New Town brought to Redditch,
the town has reverted to evolutionary growth and changes that happen in all towns.
Shops come & go, businesses come & go, houses are built and day-to-day events happen,
that perhaps we comment on at the time but soon slip to the back of our memory.
It is only when you look back, on occasions such as this when we were preparing this
exhibition, that we realise that our recent history has occurred but perhaps was not
documented.
We therefore set out to create a time line of the significant events in Redditch over the
last 30 years and this is presented below. You may not agree with these, you may know
of more events we have not got, so we would welcome your input.
For example, we know these events occurred but not when. Do you know?
When was that?
● Brooklyn Garage, which was founded in Inkberrow, is taken over by Bristol Street Motors.
● The removal of the water wheel in the square in the Kingfisher centre replaced by BHS
café.
● Alcester Street Developments Building on the open car park.
● Housing Estates in Coldfield Drive Built.
● Phase II Brock Hill Estates started.
We now see this as an on-going exercise to document our recent history. Any input you
have will be most welcome. But in the mean-time, the following pages are what we’ve
found so far.
