D’Oyly Carte
Richard D’Oyly Carte was the manager of the
Royalty Theatre Soho who brought Gilbert and
Sullivan together to write a one act drama called
“Trial by Jury”.
He realised that they could help him present good
English comic opera and commissioned further
operas, such as “The Sorcerer” in 1877 and then
“H.M.S Pinafore” a year later. Following these
successes he formed the Mr D’Oyly Carte Opera
Company.
D’Oyly Carte built the Savoy Theatre in 1881 to
show their works. After Richard D’Oyly Carte died
in 1901 the company passed down the family.
