NextBack"It was the early days of the Second World War at the end of 1939. I was six years old then and just going into seven years old, I lived in Aston Birmingham, and one day we were all gathered together at Yew Tree School and marched with our gas masks to Aston railway Station. None of us knew where we were going and I don't think any of us very much cared.”
“When we arrived at Crabbs Cross School all the other children were assigned to a family and I was the only one who had nowhere to go! The family who eventually did take me could not keep me for long as they could only accommodate a girl. After a few weeks I was put in the care of Mr. Aston and this is where I met Lily (Her daughter and member of Crabbs Cross Methodist Church). The years passed by and they brought me happiness, love and devotion. Lily brought me up in the Church and gave me a good, firm background for life. Many of the things that Lily taught me I still find useful today.”
