Pigs for Victory

“During the war, Major Smith was worried that his night workers were forgetting a proper breakfast, so he decided to keep pigs. I don't know exactly where he kept them, probably on the Enfield allotments. All went well until the time came to kill the pigs then Major Smith asked around to find someone who could do the deed. He heard that little Fred Gateley could kill pigs and as Harry Farley lived that way he was asked to bring Fred in one morning on the back of his motorbike and take him back home at the end of the day.”

“Harry said that Fred was a marvellous passenger, he would sway right over as it turned corners and really help with the control of the machine. Fred didn't take long to kill the pigs and went off to entertain himself for the day in Redditch until it was time to go home. When he turned up for his lift home, he was as drunk as a lord and he could hardly stand up. Harry wondered how he was going to get him home. Anyway, Harry put him on the back of his bike and he swayed this way and that exactly as before although Harry never knew whether it was by accident or design. Two days later, Harry had to take Fred back to the Enfield to cut the pigs up and exactly the same happened again, Fred rolled up at the end of the day hardly able to stand up.”
