Humphries's

Peter Harris remembers…..NextBack

Humphries's shoe shop was the largest one in the town. Situated in Evesham Street, it had one of the first foot X Ray machines for measuring feet, and getting the correct fitting for Clarkes shoes.  You put your shoes on, popped them in the slot, and looked to see how much space you had to 'grow' into. I remember the machine looked a bit like a 'What The Butler Saw' arcade machine. It was said that the shop never had need of a safe - the money was randomly put in an empty shoe box, of which there were hundreds and hundreds. My mother always made sure we had the best shoes she could afford, so hence we went to Humphries's.
