Huins

Peter Harris remembers…..NextBack

Huins  shoe shop was on the corner of Market Place and Evesham Street. The main warehouse was down at British Mills at the bottom of Fish Hill. They had branches in other towns, including Cheltenham, which was still open in around 2000 when I visited it whilst tracing my family history. My great Grandfather came from Cheltenham, (following in the steps of his elder brother), to work as a foreman shoemaker at Huins in 1870 ish. When Huins closed the shop, it was taken over by Linton Galleries, a high class gift shop. Unfortunately, Redditch being somewhat of a 'Tatters' town, many people went in but no-one bought anything much, with the inevitable result that it turned into a cake shop after a couple of years.
