Star and Garter Home – Strenuous efforts are being put forth to raise the sum of
£2,000 for the purpose of endowing a bed, and naming a room in the Star and Garter Home
for totally disabled soldiers and sailors. The object is to raise this sum, so that Redditch can
nominate a soldier or sailor for the bed and room.. To further the object an auction sale was
held on Saturday, in the new Drill Hall, and was opened by Mrs Whiteley (wife of the
member for Mid Worcestershire). Before the sale about £300 was in the bank. A kitten was
first put up for sale by Mrs Whiteley, and this produced £10. A pony was a good source of
income, bringing in something like £15, including a donation from Mr R. W. Smith the donor
of the pony. The sale, which was continued until late in the evening, was resumed on
Thursday night. Mrs H. S. Bartleet opened the proceedings, and there was a capital
attendance on both occasions. Mr Frank Neasom (of the firm of Messrs. Neasom and White)
was the auctioneer, and through his ability the sales were made more successful. The
committee hope by the end of the present week to make the first £1,000.
