Crabbs Cross Soldiers’ Deaths – Pte G. Lee and Gunner Ernest Porthouse
George Lee is remembered on St Luke’s war memorial, Headless Cross, Redditch.
(According to Remembering Redditch’s Fallen Heroes book, George Lee was killed in action

April 28 1917 and served in Royal Marine Light Infantry. Remembered on Arras Memorial in
France. That he was born in 1891 in Astwood Bank to Stephen and Mary Ann Lee of 9 The
Slough, Crabbs Cross.)
On 1911 census George Lee, aged 20, cycle finisher, lived with his parents Stephen and Mary Ann Lee and
siblings at 9 The Slough, Crabbs Cross. His brother Joseph Walter Lee aged 12, was one of them and he was
killed in the war in 1918.)
