"I can remember what the cottage looked like, it had sash windows and a path which
sloped down to the front wooden gate. My grandmother was a Chipperfield and so I had
a toy Chipperfield lorry to sit on. I used to put the dog inside it then we used to roll down
the path and crash into the gate - the dog used to go one way and I would go the other.

'There were other cottages on the brickyard, and several houses. In one house, a lady
had a horse. My brother went to stroke the horse when it suddenly raised its head and
hit my brother in the face, so that his nose bled. He went into the machine sheds to wash
his face, as water was kept in there, I don't know why.

"We were only a stone's throw from the town. I remember my mum losing me up town
and I had walked all the way home back to the brickyard. I was only about four. 'The
cottages were tied, and when my father heard that the brickyard was closing down he
rented a cottage in Pumphouse Lane, Webheath. He rented it for about a year before he
        moved there.
