candidates gained distinction, Norah and Mildred were in the first 10. Maybe the middle
class secondary school pupils had less stress then their working class elementary school
piers. But they were still affected by the disruption the war caused.
To be a child in Redditch through the war was both exiting and for most children
disruptive. Missing fathers and brothers some who never returned to the town. Their
mothers worked hard to keep the family together. Schooling and family life was changed
and these changes affected the children for the rest of their lives.
In 1918 the Fisher Act was passed the school leaving age was put up to 14; hopefully it
would improve the lot of next generation of school children.
