       A Cottage Hospital

In 1865, having taken much interest in the matter of the provision of cottage hospitals,
and having had considerable correspondence on the matter with Alfred Napper, the
founder of village hospitals, William Avery sent a letter to the Redditch Indicator, which
       was published in 1865:

Sir, I have for some time been collecting information relative to a hospital – on
the Cranley principle – for Redditch. I believe it is quite practicable, and would
                           *
be of immense benefit to the town and neighbourhood. Would any of your
readers kindly forward me any particulars which would assist in bringing about
             this matter.

I am, yours truly, WILLIAM AVERY, Headless Cross, October 30th, 1865.

When Smallwood Hospital was opened in 1895 William Avery was one of the trustees, and

a member of the Board of Management. 46
