Redditch People
Introduction
In 2015, the Redditch Local History Society undertook to mount an exhibition featuring
“Redditch People”
There was a lot of debate about what constituted a Redditch person, did they have to be
born in the town, did they have to have owned a factory or other business or did they
have to be “famous”?
In the end we put it to our members to nominate Redditch people on the basis of of people
“who have influenced the growth or reputation of Redditch or have served the community
in the town.”
We also agreed that all nominations would be accepted, we could not be judgemental
about accepting some and rejecting others.
The result is we had about 140 nomination from all walks of life and across all generations.
Every nominee was included in our People Wall with a an A5 summary sheet about them
and about thirty-five were singled out and detailed A3 sheets produced after researching
there contribution to the town.
The exhibition was successfully mounted in November 2015 and this book contains the
majority of the work displayed. The only changes being the formatting to allow more
readability.
Post Exhibition Nominations
We knew that the nominations we had were only from RLHS members and that we could
not have possibly included all subjects which fitted our definition. Therefore we provided
at the exhibition a facility for visitors to nominate their own Redditch People.
As a result, we have additional names to add to our list, but at the time of publication of
this document, these additional names have not yet been researched.
Therefore they are included for reference and hopefully, in subsequent editions, that
researchw il have been completed and they will be included with more detail.
Continual Updates
Similarly, we hope that our members, and non-members, we continue to provide
information about all the subjects so that we can progressively update this document into
a more comprehensive reference document.
