Redditch People
Garry Allcock
Drummer and Band Leader
Garry Allcock was born in 1938 in Redditch and 1938 -
started to play drums in his early teens. He played
with many local bands in Redditch and his first Garry Allcock
professional job was when he was 18 playing with (Source: garryallcock.co.uk)
the Wylie Price Orchestra at the Top Rank Dance Hall
in Coventry.
In 1974 he put all the experience he had gained into
forming his own band the 16 piece Big Swing Band,
the ‘Midland All-Stars Big Band’.
I remember him from school and my Youth Club and
John Bonham asked him for tips on drumming.

Fish Hook & Tackle Manufacturer Samuel Allcock

Polycarp Allcock founded the Allcock Company to
manufacture fish hooks. On September 19th 1829 a © RLHS 2015
son Samuel was born. He started working in the
business alongside his schooling from the age of ten
and when 25 married the daughter of James Baylis
who also worked in the fishing tackle trade.
The business started on a site between Unicorn Hill
and Bates Hill but expanded such that in 1866 a new
site was purchased in Clive Road.
He always took his civic responsibilities seriously and
was somewhat ahead of his time when it came to
workers welfare.
