onto metal workings and is reputed to have made his first spring in his workshop at the
rear of his house.
In 1854 he moved to Lodge Road where he was so successful the premises that he was
using soon became too small in fact by 1900 he tried to purchase the Baptist church and
Sunday school in Ipsley Street. He did purchase these buildings but only when the Baptist
church was ready to move.
Not long after he had built his new offices in Ipsley Street he was again in consultation for
the house and land owned by Millwoods. This was Southmead House and the field which
Millwood did sell and he moves into Holloway House which he also owned. This land soon
became factory number 2 with factory number 1 across Millsboro Road.
At this time he started to acquire the land from Millsboro Road down to Union Street and
up to Beuford Street to build houses for his staff and employees. He also built Southmead
Crescent which was for his senior staff. All of these properties were for rent and a local
company was selected to collect the rents.
This company in 1938 had Overseas Representatives in nearly all the major countries of
the world and was exporting to the all regularly. This is why Charles Terry could employee
most of this family to work within the Company.
Around 1910 Terry’s produced items to be used around the home, for the bicycle, motor
cycle, car and nearly every industry around Britain.1938 Terry’s bought out a new rang
starting with Anglepoise Mirrors, and Extra Motoring and Fireside Comfort with Spring
Footrests, and then Anglepoise Lamps for all trades.
This was short lived as by mid 1960’s most of this trade had dropped off leaving the family
no choice but to sell up and move on. Most of the family left Redditch but most of the large
family has past on and the large memorial to the Terry’s family can still be seen at
Plymouth Road Cemetery. The Anglepoise Lamps was sold to America and are still being
produced in America.
